In Flash, ActionScript can be used to control the running sequence of a movie or a SWF clip. ActionScript can control the behaviors like stop and play Timelines, jump to different frames or Levels and control button actions or events. In Flash game design or development, it is important to control these functions properly for a smooth run of the entire animation.

In the “Instance Name” box of the Property Inspector, one can set the stop action by simply writing ‘stop_btn’. However, it should be noted that ActionScript can be added only to symbol instances and keyframes. Otherwise, in the Actions Pane of the Actions Window, the actions will be grayed out. To add an Action to an object, the object must be selected first and the action can be added. Here, it is important to name the symbol instances before writing the actual script and the action name along with the symbol icon should be visible at the upper-left corner of the Property Inspector.

One can select Window > Actions (F9) to open the Actions panel. In the Actions panel, the Script Assist button and the Global Functions category in the Toolbar can be used to access a list of all the actions that fall under that category. The Stop action can be added by double-clicking the Stop action in Global Functions > Timeline Control option. An action can also be added to the list by dragging it from the Toolbar to the Script pane or by selecting the Add (+) button and choosing the action from the pull-down menu. As in any Flash web development project, the movie clip should be tested and the play and stop actions should be checked once the actions are set in the animation.

Additionally, for a more vivid Flash graphic design, the playback head should be set to a frame number or a frame level using the ‘goto’ action (that has several parameters to move the playback head.

Setting up an online payment system is an indispensable part of the whole web ecommerce development process and integral to any ecommerce site solution. After all, the sole purpose of initiating with an internet business is to make money online, that is, to accept payments online!

You may use an ecommerce website builder or opt for custom development by subscribing to one of the ecommerce web design services. Either way, the online payment system would involve setting up

A shopping cart to accept orders and maintain them.

A merchant account to direct all online payments you receive to your bank account.

An Internet gateway to connect the merchant account with the shopping cart.

To elucidate, while the shopping card is supposed to accept credit card information, it is the function of the internet gateway to run the credit card information and process deposits to your bank account.

Coming to how to choose a merchant account provider, you are suggested to consider the following:

The contract may span as long as five years long.

As you sign up, the merchant account provider would seek information on your estimated earnings through the year. Do not slip up to mention too low annual income, lest you wish to be shut down by the provider.

If the provider goes bankrupt, you will lose money, as generally speaking, merchant accounts hold your hard-earned money.

You must either make sure that your merchant account provider can handle high value credit card amounts everyday or be sure that you would not make a great deal of income.

As a matter of fact, merchant accounts accept VISA and MasterCard only.

It can take up to two weeks for a merchant account provider to transfer your online payments to your bank account.

With many manipulative merchant account providers at large, you must sign the contract for a merchant account with reasonable amount of caution.

I am the webmaster at www.synapsewebsolutions.co.uk – a ecommerce site solution offering quality and cost-efficient offshore website design and development solutions.

So you have made the decision to have a website built for your business, but are not sure of what is involved, and where the costs lie? It can be confusing, especially if you are not particularly Internet or PC savvy: web development, web hosting, domain names, email addresses. All of these are factors that need to be considered and costed into your project. As well as that, you’ve seen many great websites on the net, which are packed with loads of cool features, moving graphics, options to sign up for newsletters, database searches and links to other sites. Do you need all these features, and how much will all that cost? What should you have in your website, what’s the process, and how much will it all set you back?

The first step is to think of a suitable domain name. The name of your company can be a great start, so you get www.mybusiness.co.nz or www.mybusiness.com . Which do you need: dot co or dot com? I believe that a dot co domain name is OK for most New Zealand businesses, and that a dot com name still really implies an American site, although this is not a fast rule. Why not identify your business as a NZ one straight off and use dot co, which will promote our country to overseas net users? Something else to think about is whether the name lends itself to what your business does or provides. So the domain name www.circusanimalhire.co.nz (it doesn’t exist, I checked!) tells you pretty much what the website is all about. A name like www.prsmythe.co.nz doesn’t give as much information about the core business, and so users then have to actually view the site to determine what is provided. You need a lot of advertising, PR and brand marketing clout to get a name like www.amazon.com to be synonymous with books right? But it is possible as we know. When you’ve thought of your name, register it: $39.95 will secure you the name for a year.

What does a website cost? A basic website can cost as little as $1000 – $2000. What do you get for that? You generally get what’s called a brochureware website. That’s one that is like what it’s name suggests: an online brochure introducing your business, products and services, and encouraging users of your site (your target market) to contact you. You can have the basic structure of three pages:
1) Home page which introduces you, your business, products and services
2) Products and/or Services page for more detail
3) Contact page, which may include location (a map!), phone numbers and email facility.
The latter may be in the form of a link, which opens up a blank email when clicked on, or may include a form, which users fill in, and this generates an email which is sent to you. The form is great way of encouraging users to give you a certain amount of required information, so that you can give the most informed response, and hopefully generate some business. A brochureware website is a great start if you want to start off small, with a good Internet presence at a reasonable price. Don’t forget you can always expand it over time once you have analysed its effectiveness, seen the benefits, and increased your confidence. This sort of site supports your existing marketing strategy and initiatives and is another facet of your marketing strategy: it’s an advertisement for your business.

What if you want your website to be more than just an advertisement, and actually want it to make the sale for you right there and then online? What if you want some more features, such as a search facility, where people can enter criteria and search through your products, and maybe place an order on your site or even pay for it online? With these features you can actually secure a sale or an order while the user is still visiting your website. This dynamic functionality involves including programming and database components in your website and so will cost you more. What you want determines what it will cost you. (What you NEED may cost you less, so get advice). There are no set prices for including this sort of functionality, and the best bet is to shop around. There are options.
1) A web development company will be able to construct an online catalogue, ordering and/or payment facility for you
2) You could buy shopping facility software yourself, and have it added to your existing site
3) You can utilise one of the many providers of this functionality who actually lease or rent the facility to you.
In the latter instance your catalogue is housed on their site, you manage it yourself and it looks like your site, but it is provided by a third party.

Even if you start with a brochureware website you can of course add features over time, and it is important to plan for this from the outset if that is what you want to do. Ensure that your website is scalable, that is that it can be expanded readily, without having the whole thing reconstructed from scratch. Don’t forget to consider the size of your site and the impact that this can have on your web hosting costs. Adding a catalogue with a lot of pictures can take up more room on your website hosting company’s server, and this may cost you more if you start to exceed the storage limit that you have for your account. Credit card facilities also need to be paid for – they will generally cost you a set up fee, a yearly fee and a percentage of each transaction, but they are convenient in that revenue is collected immediately.

Don’t forget also that once a website has been constructed and launched there may need to be ongoing maintenance of the site, in terms of keeping the data in it up to date, periodic review and testing and further development work. Discuss with your web developer what might be required and what these costs might be. This should be discussed with you during the initial planning phase of your web development project. Also discuss search engine optimisation (SEO), which is the process of ensuring your site can be found on the net. Many web development companies will include this service initially as part of their development price, but will charge for an ongoing maintenance and review of your listings. There are Internet companies that supply these services specifically as well, so have a look around. SEO of your site initially and on an ongoing basis, is strongly recommended for your website, as search engines still account for over 80% of the traffic to websites.

Once your website is complete, you will need to have your website hosted, and there are many hosting company’s available which offer this service. The prices vary for these services from about $20 to $50 per month, and the value added services provided vary considerably. Options such as website stats, account size limits, number of email addresses available with each account are a consideration, as is technical support and assistance. So, a lower priced host sounds great, but they may not give you web stats or a free form script, and this may set you back if you want or need these facilities for your site. Ask the right questions, or read the available information on the hosting company’s website before you commit yourself.

So, in summary it is fair to say that the costs of owning and operating a website do not just lie in the production of the website itself, although this is the major component. You also need to consider domain name purchase, website hosting costs, domain name-based email accounts, website statistics, service/support, search engine optimisation and of course ongoing management, maintenance and development.

The Internet is rapidly evolving and one of the reasons behind this is the evolution of the many websites that are hosted around the web. Web designs are becoming more eye-catching and innovative than ever that it is often difficult to know who exactly designed the template and if the person has the money to afford these designs.

The truth is, these people actually get a Free Web Design Template online that serves as their framework and then improve and personalize the free web design template from there. A free web design template can save plenty of time creating graphics and constructing a layout that meets the current web and browser standards. There are four common places where you should be able to find at least one free web design template.

Online Web Hosts

Online web hosts understand that not everyone that use their services know how to design an attractive website. There are some online web hosts including the ones offering free plans that address the issue and offer free web design templates to choose from so the site creation process is much easier. Paid hosting services usually have a better selection of templates. One of the biggest advantages of using this source is that you can have your site hosted as soon as you choose your free web design template.

Online Template Sites

Online template sites are often the biggest sources for anyone looking for a Free Web Design Template because most of the sites get these templates from user submissions that agree to share these templates for free. Good online template sites categorize their templates so you can find which templates best suit the theme of the website. Many of the websites and blogs today get their templates from online template sites and the most active template sites get new templates each day or week.

Online Tutorial Sites

A good online tutorial can teach you how to create a free web design template only if you have the required tools so be sure you gather some website designing software. So you need to equip yourself with your favorite web design editor so you can take full advantage of these tutorials. Creating a web design template is a great way to show uniqueness to your site as long you execute the design and code perfectly. You can even combine tutorials with your own creativity skills in creating a free web design template faster and more efficiently.

Online Site Builders

Online site builders are often the best choice for people that never made or used a Free Web Design Template before. This is because these site builders often hold users by the hand going through each step where the last step builds the entire webpage. The customization features may be limited, but there is simply no faster way in making a free web design template unless team works on the website.

It is recommended to try all these online services and see what service works best for you. Then when you are finished, you can edit the template to your own liking.

In tune with the demands of a good adult website design, an experienced adult website designer endeavors to achieve the perfect focus and lighting in his/ her graphics while using Photoshop CS4.

Adult web site designers use various blurs to achieve the perfect focus, including,

Lens Blur – It involves masking or masking together with alpha channel, wherein the black most mask implies no blurring and every lighter shade of gray brings about corresponding degree of blurring effect, pure white being representative of full blurring effect. Though the blur offers high level of accuracy, it must be used cautiously as it causes lower speed.

Surface Blur – It involves removing or softening some surface details without affecting the high-contrast details around the edges. For example, removing noise caused by light on a vehicle’s image or softening the texture details of a carpet et al.

Gaussian Blur – It involves applying the blur uniformly throughout the image to soften its details over all. It may be used to give gradual blurring or gradual sharpening effect to an image.

Motion Blur – As the name itself implies, the blurring involves creating illusion of motion for a given object.

As regards lighting enhancements, adult designers can utilize techniques like,

Shaped Lighting layering, wherein the adult designer creates a white shape with soft borders to overlay an image, say of an ice-clad mountain. This would in effect brighten the part of the mountain picture falling in the white area and mask the part under the black areas in varying degrees corresponding to the soft edges and the pure black background.

Rays of light effect by drawing a white shape in the form of rays, as if coming from a particular light source, keeping in mind the perspective aspect. Then softening the beams of ray around the edges and decreasing its opacity to give it the look of subtle rays of light beams falling on your central object.

I am the webmaster at www.adultwebdesignersite.com – a web design company providing Adult web site designers and offering high quality adult website designs.quality adult website designs.

Graphic design is becoming an important aspect of almost all modern businesses. In today’s corporate culture and startup world, it’s all about how you present your business to the rest of the world. Being so much important, it’s great to have an in house graphic design department, but since it may increase your operational costs, outsourcing will be a better choice for you.

Outsourcing though solves a lot of problems, but it doesn’t mean that you just decided to outsource and it’ll work perfect. Instead, the choice of a graphic design company is a difficult task itself, but once you are done with the right selection, you’ve solved your long run problems.

While selecting a graphic design company, do consider that their artists have creative vision, but don’t ignore their business communication skills. Communication is so much important because, the designers have to give life to your idea, and it’s possible only if the idea is communicated well.

Now you may find it difficult to find a graphic design company that suits your business, but it’s not impossible to find one. Considering the given characteristics will give you a fair idea to make your choice perfect. Here it goes:

•A good graphic design company should have good listeners. Designers those are good listeners will produce best products.
•Graphic Design Company should manage time effectively. Although creative designs take time, but giving excessive amount of time to designers won’t be beneficial for your business.
•Designers who are working on your project should be detail oriented. In this regard if they ask questions, don’t think that they don’t know anything. Too many questions from you also means that they want to give you perfect results.
There may be many other aspects depending on the nature of business, but the above three are very generic and equally important for all type of businesses.

Bryan Williams is an expert outsourcing consultant, and specializes in web based business. Ifyou’re trying to find best graphic design company, a general software development company or specifically a web development company, Bryan can guide you well.

The Internet is home to lots of different websites that each sports their own unique designs. A lot of the designs can be so inspiring that you may end up being convinced to design a website of your own. Some people that have money to spare buy website templates or use the money to let a professional do the job.

Just because you don’t feel like spending any money doesn’t mean that it is totally impossible for you to Design Your Own Website Free. There are a lot of professional and non-professional designers alike that utilize free means and the results are surprisingly impressive. Here are four ways that you can design your own website free.

Using Online Templates Builders

There are lots of services that are trying to get customers in using their web services for increasing their advertising revenue. In return, these services offer online template builders so people can create custom websites based on their own preferences. These template builders are usually designed for people that have no experience in web design what so ever. Some services have better templates than others so you may find yourself checking out sites one by one until you find the site with the best service.

Using Free WYSIWYG Editors

Free WYSIWYG or “What You See Is What You Get” editors are popular amongst designers that would rather work without opening up their Internet browser. These WYSIWYG editors are designed to make it easy for people that know how to use word processors to design websites with ease. They sport a similar interface to word processors so you can focus more on the design rather than the coding behind it. Most WYSIWYG editors allow you to view the source code anyway so the sky is the limit when it comes to fine tuning your website. Adobe Dreamweaver isn’t the only WYSIWYG editor as there are plenty of software that help dDesign Your Own Website Free.

Using HTML Resources and Tutorials

If you don’t think your WYSIWYG editor is getting you anywhere, you can always find HTML resources and tutorials that will help you design your own website free. Many of these resources are free anyway and the results should be productive as long as the detailed steps are followed. HTML resources may even include friendly snippets that can be pasted onto websites that haven’t been finished yet so that there is added functionality or design on the website.

Using Other Website Templates

Templates lay out the framework on how websites should look like on the template author’s perspective. Whether you agree with his perspective or not, you can always make changes to these templates as long as you have the permission to. You can design your own website free by substituting graphics with your own graphics and change the layout of the template however you wish.

It is really possible to Design Your Own Website Free and the results don’t look cheap if you have good creative skills. It is important to have a website editing software to effectively apply these tips.

If you do not have a website for your business then you need to start on it today. And with the availability of Free Web Page Design you have no excuses not to get started. The internet is the future of advertising for most businesses. That is where people turn for answers to their problems. Whether they need a product or a service, they go to the internet to find it. If your company does not have a web page how will customers ever find you?

A professionally designed website can be quite expensive, but there are other cheaper and even free options that you can explore. Free web page design does not mean that your website will look cheap. The templates that are used are based on the layouts of some of the most successful and popular sites. This means that they are proven to be eye catching and user friendly, the two most important factors for a web page.

You want your site to grab the user’s attention so they stay to explore instead of continuing to surf. It is also critical that the site is easy to navigate and user friendly or this will drive potential customers away even if they enjoy the content. The internet has made customers very picky. There attention spans are short and they are used to having lots of options at their finger tips. This means that if there is any little thing about you site that they do not like they may leave to find another source for the goods or services they are looking for.

The first step in Free Web Page Design is to find a free temple to use for your own site. The template will provide the layout for the site as an example, so all that you have to do is replace the sample text and photos with your own information. Once you have replaced all the sample information, you will have a nice looking, professional web page. If you want to have a website with multiple pages, you should use the same template for all the pages so that the layout will be consistent. This will make the site look professional and will also make it easy to navigate for users.

Since you are using a template for the layout, your work in creating the website should focus on the content. Good quality content is what keeps users on a page and what keeps them coming back for more. Content is not just limited to text either. The images that you use are as if not more important than the text because the visual images are what will draw people into the page to begin with. Your Free Web Page Design template will have spaces allotted for images, but it is up to you to find those show stopping images that will create traffic for your site. Remember that images are great, but bigger is not always better. You want your page to load quickly and big images can slow it down. So size them appropriately before adding them to the page.

For more great information on Free Web Page Design visit our new website www.myecommercecenter.com.

Yep today is my birthday and yes I am now officially 40 years old……whoa! Strange thing is I don’t feel any different than I did yesterday when I was 39 (and no thats not me in the photo, if it was I wouldn’t be writing this post….lol). I don’t see any hairs growing out of my ears yet, my back didn’t give out on me when I got of bed this morning and I still don’t need to take Metamucil (for all you youngsters out there this is what helps you crap regularly – what I affectionately call “Poopin’ Juice”).

Honestly I don’t see what the big deal is. I don’t feel older and I look alot better now than most guys half my age – sorry ladies I’m taken

Everyone I know has been giving me crap for the past two weeks about all the stuff that is supposedly going to happen when the big day arrives. So far nothing yet. Maybe all this 40 stuff will kick in as the day goes along and I wont notice it. Or maybe the unseen army of 40 year old nomes will magically appear tonight when I go to sleep and whisk me away and do the whole alien probe thing and cause all of the terrible 40 stuff to happen tomorrow. Who knows! Who cares!

Seriously though I am glad I made it this far. Most people don’t, not by choice. And to think in just 10 years time I will be 50! Now thats a big whoa right there. I’ll be half a century old. Amazing. So yes indeed, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me eee, Happy Birthday to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, and many more, on channel four – ok sorry got carried away there for a second.

Hopefully turning 40 won’t affect my psd to wordpress or psd to html conversions. I think I am supposed to start losing my memory at 40 or something like. I can’t remember where I read that or if someone told me that. Hmmmmm it’s probably just a myth anyway.

So if you’ve turned 40 or close to hitting 40 or hell I don’t care, let me know how you felt, how you feel or if there are any senior citizen support groups I am supposed to join now. And wish me a Happy Birthday damnit. Now I gotta go put on my Depends.

There are many times when I am doing a conversion, whether its PSD to Wordpress or PSD to HTML, that I come across an image that does not compliment the design in anyway. Normally this is due to the fact that the image is low resolution or the images in question have nothing to do with the design at all.

Often times, designers will use an image in their layout because it looks “cool” or they think it will make their design stand out.

A majority of the time, this is not the case, as the images being used do not go well with the layout. The colors don’t match or the image isn’t a clear or actual representation of the page that it is on.

Trust me, as a designer myself I am guilty of the same thing. There is however a way to remdy the situation. One of the best things a designer can do is use stock images. There are a ton of stock sites out there and they pretty much offer the same images (I think they are all the same company running different little sites, but again this is just my opinion and probably only matters to me)

One site that I use religiously is called Fotolia. For me they are probably one of the best, if not the best stock site that can be found anywhere. Their images really kick ass and their prices are pretty decent. Whenever I need an image this is the place I usually go.

One thing that I really like about Fotolia is they give you the opportunity to download a comp image. This is a low resolution image about 512px wide with proportionate height. This is a awesome way to test how an image is going to look in the layout. The best thing about this feature is the comp image has no water mark on it like the majority of other stock sites out there, especially iStock. Theres nothing I hate more in than getting a layout and I see one of those iStock water marks on one of the images.

So if your a designer or you are working with a designer, point them in the direction of Fotolia. You’ll find some pretty awesome photos to use and if you can find what your looking for right away, with a little time and effort I am positive you will.

Now as most of you know video is a very huge thing right now. Everybody is doing it and everybody wants to do it.

A lot of designers are releasing themes that support video, both free and commercial and of course we have the clients that want to jump on the band wagon and start using video on their sites. So you can believe we get asked a lot how to insert video into posts and what not.

Now really this is a very simple thing to do and I am sure sure that most people reading this will be able to do it with their eyes taped shut. This is really for those of you who have no business being on the internet, let alone having a web site.

That was a joke of course.

Anyway, moving on. Now basically there are quit a few plugins for Wordpress that you can use, but for me, personally I think these are a waste of time. Not only a waste of effort but having too many plugins in use on your site will actually slow it down. So before you want to add anything to your site, check and see if it can be done “without” a plugin and if not start looking for a plugin. Easy peezy!

Ok, so one of the most popular sites for videos is YouTube.com and that is what I am focusing this tutorial on. Sure, there are a lot of video sites out there and I am sure they have their own instructions, but for this little tutorialI am going to use YouTube.com as a reference.

If your sitting there asking yourself what is this YouTube.com stuff, then you have no business trying to embedd video on your site.

Another joke.

So you head over to YouTube.com and you find yourself an interesting video, I myself am a big fan of Jeff Dunham so I did a search and I found a video that I like. So I click on it and I see the following screen (click the image – it will get bigger):

Now as you can see I highlighted a section in the lower right hand corner. This is what you need to focus on as this is the code your going to need. So all you need to do is copy the code that is there. Once you have copied it, go to the post or page your creating. Look in the upper right hand corner of the post or page editor and you’ll see a tab next to “Visual” called “HTML”. Click it. You’ll see the text you have written all bundled up rather nicely in html code. Find the area you want to insert your video and paste it in. Once you do you will see something like this:

So now that you have pasted it in you will notice that there are two area that concern the width and the height of the video. Adujust these to fit the your post or page accordingly but remember, bigger isnt always necessarily best and neither is smaller. Fo this tutorial I have left the dimensions intact and as you can see I now have a nice, funny video of Jeff Dunham and Peanut that you can enjoy.

I think that any designer/coder would agree with me that one of the major contributing factors as to whether or not a psd conversion goes as smoothly as possible is how well the actual specifications for the project are defined by the client.

Even though your project may have the greenlight from your client, that does not necessarily mean it is ready to be coded.

Many times I have started a PSD to HTML conversion and had the client come back to me asking for changes here and changes there. Or they wanted editible text in an area that was at first going to be an image. More often than not, last minute changes after a psd conversion has begun can throw the entire project into a tail spin fast.

So my suggestion would be to sit down with the client over the phone or via chat and clarify every nuance you can think of. What I like to do is basically start at the top and work my way down. In essence I see every project broken down into different sections. This works really well for me when I’m doing a PSD to Wordpress conversion but it can apply to other kinds of conversions as well.

I start work on one and when its done I move on to the next. I normally begin with the header and focus all my attention it. Every little item is given my best effort. Once the header is complete I move to the sidebar or side navigation area. Same thing applies and when that done I move to the content area and lastly the footer.

Now when I speak with a client I basically follow the same structure. I speak with them in deatil about each area until all the notes are coverd and there is nothing left to question. This way I can start working on a project assured in the fact that I am covering all bases. This is normally the case, but there are those rare instances where you get a client that can’t make up their mind. To remedy this I normally get them to understand that any changes that are requested after I begin work will cost extra.

So my advice is to make sure the project parameters are clearly defined before starting any project. Trust me, it can save you from a world of trouble.

I have been working on a little pet project of my own for the past few months in my spare time, so I thought I would I shamelesly plug it here for your enjoyment, well that’s not true, its mostly for mine Anyway, so I do a lot of work with clients that do not have a domain name and more importantly no web hosting and I am usually caught in the middle when trying to recommend a company that will suit their needs and fit their budget. I am not a particularly fond of any one hosting company, even though I do have a banner on the site for HostGator.

I have used many different ones and each one has their good points and their bad points and in my little humble opinion that means nothing to anyone except me, they are all pretty much the same.

So I decided that I would create a site where people could review and rate their hosting provider or if they were using some obscure company that only a few have heard about, they could leave a review for them as well. As I did research for the site, a friend of mine who shall remain nameless (OK his name is Chris) helped me out tremendously. He offered up some very good ideas and blah blah, you get the point. But one main thing he pointed out to me was the fact that there are literally thousands of web hosting review sites out there.

Now, I am not one to shy away from anything, especially if there is a ton of competition. Right now I am enjoying a page rank of 5, I have the #1 postion on Yahoo for the keyword PSD to Wordpress (as of this writing) and I also enjoy a spot on page 1 on Google, postion #10, for the same term. Do a search for PSD to Wordpress and there are thousands of sites out there, and with a little bit of effort, I’ve outpositioned the majority of them. Not to shabby in my book.

So I hope to do the same with my new web hosting reviews site. Basically I hope to make it one of the best review sites anyone will be able to find. A lofty goal, but a goal none the less. So if you are using a hosting company (and I am sure you are) and if you think they are great or you think they suck eggs, stop in and leave a review. As I stated before, even it its a no name company you can leave a review.

Enjoy

Now I know there are a lot of posts about recommended Wordpress plugins out there and your probably asking “So why write another one?” Well in my line of work I get to sift my way through a bunch of plugins that clients request be added to their site when helping a client with a psd to wordpress conversion.

If you can think of any kind of Wordpress plugin I am sure someone, some where, has developed one that will suite your needs.

So I have decided to list the plugins that I normally use when developing a personal site as well as the ones I recommend to clients.

Contact Form:

I normally use Contact Form 7 plugin. Actually I use it here on my site. I find that it is very easy to configure and you can create virtually any kind of form you can think of. Also, it doesn’t put a heavy load on the site like some of the other contact plugins out there.

If your looking for a really good contact form plugin, I highly recommend it. You can read more about it here: Contact Form 7

SEO:

One SEO plugin that really stands out above all the other plugins out there is All In One SEO. This is probably the easiest plugin to use for SEO purposes and of course I use it here as well.

It is very easy to customize the options and once it is activated, this plugin can and will help with your SEO needs. You can read more about it here: All In One SEO

Site Map:
One thing that most web sites lack is a site map. Of course you can create your own, just like I did for this site (my site map) or you can have one automatically generated using a plugin. The one plugin that comes to mind, and one that is probably the best out there is Google XML Sitemaps.

Once activated this will create a compliant XML-Sitemap of your site. What happens is when you create a post or a page or even edit a post or page, the site map is updated and all the major search engines are notified of the change. This is absolutely wonderful! And yes, I use it here as well. You can read more about here: Google XML Sitemaps

These are just a few of the plugins I use when working on a project. I use many more but these represent the main three that I recommend to all of my clients.

I’ve been in this game for quit sometime and lately I have seen a few new “psd conversion” services pop up over night.

True the psd slicing niche is fairly new. Main stream new? Yes. Concept new? No. The idea of slicing up a PSD file and turning it into a website has been around for years.

Now I check out the competition on a daily basis and no doubtedly they check me out. We have to. Its part of the game. I check and see what they have to offer. Hvae they changed it? Have they added anything new? Any new samples of work they have done? Around and around we go. Like I said, its part of the game we play.

One thing I don’t get, a lot of these service providers offer to do standard things for a price. Things that should be done to begin with and given to the client at no additional charge.

For example I see a lot of these companies offering to comment out the css file for an extra five or ten bucks? Why? It should be done automatically and for free. I have also seen some companies offer to comment out the html code for an additional fee. Once again, Why? This is another service that should be included for free. I mean seriously, as a coder don’t you like to know where a certain div ends? I’m sure you do. I do! And believe me your client does as well.

One thing that makes me laugh are the companies that offer to make the conversion compatible across all browsers, for a fee of course. Why? If the project is coded correctly then it should work in all browsers. Well except for the one browser we all know and love “IE”.

Seriously folks, what’s next? Are they going to start charging to zip the files and send?

It all boils down to what a company has to offer. Or rather what they are willing to offer. Personally, I think that adding commented style sheets and commented html files for free is a must for any psd conversion. Its not only good for myself, in case I have to come back and edit it for a reason, but more importantly its important to my client.

But hey that’s just me.

The majority of psd to wordpress conversions I do normally involve the creation of a static front page in Wordpress as well as the blog area of a website.

You can think of a static front page as the “Home Page” of the website and is the first page your visitors will see. Normally, the first thing people see when coming to a site using Wordpress is a list of the most recent posts. But, with a static front page, the site can display anything you want while keeping the “blog” area of your site separate.

The use of a static front page is generally reserved for sites that want to use Wordpress’ ability to act as a powerful CMS (Content Management System).

Sites wishing to use a CMS to manage their site generally have more static content to serve to their visitors but also want the flexibility to run a blog area for visitor interaction. Normally the static content (or pages) will be content that will change very little over time.

In order to set up a static front page for your Wordpress site. You first need to create two pages: one for the static front page and one to handle your blog area. In order to do this first open up page.php in your favorite text editor and at the top you will see this:

change Page to something you can easily remember. I normally just call it Static Front Pageand. So now it should look something like this:

save this file as static-front-page.php, or whatever you wish to call it. Now you can modify this file to include or show any way you wish.

Secondly open up the index.php file and once again open up the page.php file as well. Copy the commented section at the top of page.php (highlighted below):

and paste into your index.php file, so now your index.php file should look like this at the bottom:

Change the template name to Blog Page (just like in the screen shot above) and save your file as blog-page.php. Now once you have these two pages created make sure you upload them to your site and place them into the theme folder that you are using.

Now simply log in as Admin, and in the Pages section choose Add New and create a page called Main and choose the page template “Static Front Page” from the Template drop down menu in the Attribute section located on the right hand side. Click “Publish”

Now do the same thing to create your blog section. Log in as Admin, go to Pages and select Add New, call your page Blog and choose the “Blog Page” template from the Template drop down menu in the Attributes section located on the right hand side. Click Publish.

Now back in the admin area, go to Settings and choose Reading. At the top where it says “Front page displays” choose static front page. From the Front Page drop down menu choose “Main” and from the Posts Page drop down choose Blog and click on Save Changes.

Your site will now use have a static front page as well as a blog section. Remember you can make your static front page look anyway you want and include anything you want. Be creative. Having a good looking static front page could determine if your visitors will come back for more.

We all know that designing an awesome looking layout is great, especially when the client sees it and your presented with a bunch of “oooooos” and “ahhhhhhs”. Its an awesome feeling.

Of course, that layout probably has a great combination of colors as well as graphics. But more importantly one thing that is sorely understated and not taken into account are the fonts.

Fonts play an important role in any layout. They give a graphical presentation of what the final outcome will look like. Basically fonts can and do set the look and feel of a design.

So when your ready to have that layout converted, it is always best to include any and all fonts that were used in the design.

Sure, I know some fonts are proprietary, some could be commercially licensed and you may be a little hesitant to share them with anyone not inherently associated with your company or with the project.

More often than not, I run into trouble doing a port because the fonts used in a design are not system fonts or I do not have it. Photoshop, in all of its infinite awesomeness, makes the choice to substitute any missing fonts with fonts that are readily available and closely resemble the original font. Usually the substitution doesnt look anything like the original and normally the substitution causes all kinds of layout issues.

A lot of times, I get psd files with all of the font layers rasterized. Now what this does is make the text uneditible, of course, but if the person who is coding your site is creating a page or multiple pages for you, or creating a static front page for Wordpress, and you want the content put in, I for one will not type it. I will generally just ad some Lorum Ipsum text.

This can make clients really upset because they expect one thing but get another. So if your expecting to see what you have in your psd file on an actual page, in a fair amount of time, then don’t flatten your font layers. More importantly, if you want your design to look exactly as you layed it out – I recommend including your fonts.

I have been doing a lot of research about SEO and getting ranked for the keywords that one chooses for their site. Of course I came across numerous “tips and tricks” but one interesting solution I came across was a plugin called KeywordLuv.

Basically what this plugin does is

“Reward commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their website, giving them improved anchor text.”

In essence this gives you a link back to your web site using the keyword you choose. For example, lets say you have a website about free wordpress themes and you want to make a comment on this particular post. In the comment form, in the name field, you would add your name in the following way (without the quotation marks) “yourname@free wordpress themes”, you would add your e-mail and your web site url and of course make your comment.

Now once your comment is approved, the term free wordpress themes you chose to use in the name field will be linked back to your site. The only drawback is that the site that uses this plugin my be a “do follow” site, meaning, it will allow the search engines to follow any links to their perspective site. This could be an awesome way to build quality back links to your site, especially if that site has a high pr.

So I thought about it for a bit and came to the following conclusion. My site has a pr of 5, and it was “no-follow” by default. I really want people to comment on my work or on any posts that I make or plan to make, so I figured why not give visitors an incentive to make a comment. The visitor gets a quality link back to their site and I get some relevent content in return.

So last night I removed the “no-follow” from the site, and installed the Keywordluv plugin. Now, if you would like a quality link back to your site, from a site with a pr of 5, then by all means look through my posts and make some comments. Just make sure your comment is relevent to the post or I wont approve it and make sure your name, keywords and url are not associated with adult sites, or any kind of affiliate marketing. In other words, make sure the site you are going to link to has content that people will be interested in and will want to visit. I will visit your site and if I find that all your trying to do is sell something, then I will send you a email letting you know your link wasnt approved and why.

I know you probabaly didn’t get that little joke, so let me elaborate for you if I may.

Normally when I create a design and I am working in Photoshop (of course) I like for it to be organized.

I organize everything appropriately, just like I laid out in my previous post “Organizing Your PSD Files”. It is relatively easy to do and once you get into the habit of doing it, you start doing it without thinking.

Another thing I do is name my layers. Yep, every single one. Even if there were a million layers, Id name all of them. Why you may ask. Well think about it. Let’s say for example you have a layout your working on, and there is a little bird that the client wants moved to another area.

What if the layer that little bird was on was called layer 127. Do you think you would honestly remember what layer that the little bird was on if there are 127 layers or more? No I don’t think you would. Don’t you think it would be easier to name the layer the little birdie is on to something simple like “Little Birdie” or maybe even “birdie”? That way if you have to do anything to that layer you can easily find it and do what needs to be done.

I can’t begin to count how many conversions I have done, where I spent almost 30 minutes to an hour trying to figure out how the layers are organized. Why is that important you ask? Let me tell you. Its important because I am a professional and this is the kind of thing that helps me do a conversion properly and quickly.

Really, its very simple to do. When a new layer is created and you know what is going to be on this layer, I suggest naming it appropriately. Not only will naming the layers help you out in the long run; it will also help anyone else who may have to work with the psd file.

One of the many problems I encounter when doing a psd conversion is the lack of organization some of these psd files are laid out in. I have seen many fantastic looking layouts, but the organization of the layers leaves something to be desired. Not only can it be confusing, but it can also take up precious time trying to figure out what layer something is on so it can moved, turned off or turned on.

So in order to try and help out all the awesome designers that are out there, I have decided to put this little tutorial together. This will show you how to organize your design and not only make it easier for you to edit, but also easier for anyone else who may need to do work with the file as well.

When your are designing a layout, one of the best things you can do to make changes to that psd file easier, is to keep elements of one particular area together. The way you go about doing this is a nifty little feature available in Photoshop, that allows you to create groups.

Normally this is accomplished by making your layers pallet active, and at the very bottom, right next to the “Create A New Layer” button, is a folder button. When you hover over the button it states “Create A New Group”. When you click on on the button a folder is added to your layers pallet called “Group 1″.

Now, that you have created your first “group” you can name this group whatever you want in relation to the layout. For this example I have created a group and named it “Header” and added a few layers inside of this group so you can get the general idea. Now any work or layers associated with the header should be created inside the header group. What this does not only for you but for anyone else who may need to do something with this file, is tell them that if anything needs to be changed in the header, they need to look at the group folder called “Header”.

Another feature that is so awesome about using groups to organize your layouts, is the fact that you can add groups with groups. If you have, for example lets say, navigation that will be in the header, you can add a sub group to the header group you created earlier and add all the necessary elements in this folder. You can add as many groups or sub groups that you need to.

Now that you know how to organize your layouts, you will notice that by following this little tutorial, your work flow will become not only easier but faster as well.

This was a very simple and easy project to do as her client only wanted to use WP to manage the content as opposed to the Joomla CMS they were using previously. Great call! For this project, all they wanted were pages and no blog area. One other area of interest for this project was the fact that they wanted certain link elements to have sub items and those sub items had to display horizontal (inline) as opposed to vertically (as is the standard). After quit a bit of searching, a java script solution was found and implemented, which I believe compliments the site very well. You can see the final outcome by visiting Kansas Art Therapy

Moe Bedard, one of the leading authorities on home loan modifications and foreclosures, came to me to design PSD to Wordpress layout for his site LoanSafe.org. Moe wanted something that was unique and looked completely different than other websites in the same niche. We finally decided on a three column layout for the front page, that utilizes three different sidebar items. After the initial concept was created and approved, the second phase of the project was to incorporate the new look into his messageboard area that uses V-Bulletin. Unfortunately I do not skin for V-Bulletin, so that portion was outsourced to an individual who specialized in that field. You can the final outcome of the project b y visiting LoanSafe.org

Another template I designed and decided to turn it into a PSD to Wordpress project. It kind of turned into a ringtone type of theme for people who blog about ringtones. I was trying to go for a different look and wanted to see just exactly what I could do.

I originally created this theme for PostNuke CMS (now known as Zikula) and I wanted to see how it wouldlook as a wordpress theme, so I turned it into a PSD to Wordpress project. This theme did really well when I had it available for download.

Ok I just recently revamped this theme. I added a slider area for featured articles, the front page is set to display posts from certain categories that you have to set. I also added a tabbed section in the sidebar area, along with a 125 banner section and a 300 banner section. There is also an author page, a site map page and comments are threaded and styled. I think this turned out to be a really good PSD to Wordpress project

You can demo and download my Free Wordpress Theme
